Is It Time to Ban Vaping Flavors?
Vaping e-cigarette products has become increasingly popular over the last couple of years, due to the ever-growing concern over tobacco use and the harmful effects that tobacco often leaves on users. Recently, California passed a bill making it illegal to sell any e-liquid containing nicotine or tobacco to anyone under the age of 18. The state of Washington is soon to do the same. But what is the fuss all about and why are e-juices like vaporizers experiencing a surge in popularity?
E-juices have one distinct advantage over traditional cigarettes: they are much easier to enjoy. Unlike cigarettes, smokers do not have to maneuver their nicotine delivery systems (sometimes difficult to do without your finger} into awkward positions to get a steady stream of nicotine into the blood stream. With vapes, you simply put the bottle into your mouth and you are on your way.
This convenience has led to an increase in sales of e-cigs over the last few years. As consumers became more interested in vaporizing their own smoking, the e-juice industry boom began. Nowadays, it’s easy to find a variety of vaporizing flavors, ranging from fruity to woodsy to EightVape cool and spicy. But there’s a problem: as great as the selection is, the FDA has not yet approved any of these new products for sale. Until the FDA concludes its investigation into the safety of vaporizing tobacco products, we’re going to continue to see the dominance of standard tobacco products at the store shelves. In an effort to get in on this booming market, the health officials are calling for an emergency ban on flavored e-cigs.
If the FDA declares that flavored cigarettes are unsafe, the market will dry up, causing prices to rise and forcing smaller companies out of business. Many believe that this is the point when vaporizing cigarettes will officially become a thing of the past. However, there are a growing number of companies who are determined to stay on top of the competition, and they’ve come up with some interesting marketing ideas to appeal to young people, which is why you’ll find many of the newest flavored cigarettes on the market these days.
One of the latest attempts at appealing to young people involves putting menthol cigarettes in various exciting flavors, such as mint. These kinds of cigarettes are actually considered to be quite healthy. Because menthol cigarettes have an addictive quality, the health officials decided to put menthol in flavored cigarettes so that young people will want to try them. While the FDA is still reviewing the data on this experiment, one thing is known: the flavor is popular among young people.
Another reason why the FDA may call for an emergency ban on flavored e-cigs comes from how kids are often attracted to them. Several studies have shown that the addictive qualities of cigarettes make the smoke seem even more appealing to kids, leading to an increase in cigarette smoking among those children. The problem has only gotten worse in recent years, and the health officials think that the problem is likely to get worse if no action is taken.
Children do not have the same susceptibility to lung injuries as adults do. This is because children do not usually understand the potential dangers of smoking when they are in their teens, and they may not realize that vaporizing flavored e-cigs can be much safer than smoking a traditional cigarette. Many experts believe that an emergency ban on flavored e-cigs is overdue, especially since kids are often attracted to all things candy-like. Even some doctors agree that the problem is much better when flavored e-cigs are sold as hard candy than hard tobacco. Since children can’t really tell the difference between real candy and menthol flavored e-cigs, a ban on both would certainly cause a significant decrease in the number of youth deaths due to cigarettes.
Since the flavoring ban has yet to be passed by the legislature, it may be a while before we see a solution. Since the problem is so new, the manufacturers of hard candy flavoring will probably wait until the flavoring ban is implemented before they begin producing e-cigs with the real menthol. For now, there are still plenty of great tasting e-juices on the market, and teens and young adults just haven’t got a taste for cigarettes yet. Until the flavoring ban is enacted, they will continue to buy their regular cigarettes in hopes of getting a nice kick from a nice flavoring.
